Recording the war effort: immigrant communities in Latin America and the memory of the Great War

ABSTRACT

This paper aims to analyse the initiatives undertaken by some immigrant communities residing in Latin America to record their mobilisation around the First World War. After the armistice, European communities in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay and other countries gathered detailed information about their activities during the conflict, published as profusely illustrated books of remembrance, offered to their governments as proof of their loyalty. The article intends to establish the peculiar nature of these publications as records of the war effort, and analyse the agents and processes of their elaboration, and their role as commemorative but also as archival documents.  相似文献

传统的环境法是由自然资源 (包括能源 )法、污染防治法、自然保护法三个不同的法域组成的部门法 ,三个法域各自着眼点并不相同 ,以至于难以形成环境保护的合力。资源保护、污染防治以及自然保护对公益衡平的价值追求和对环境保全的共同目标追求使得现代环境法形成统一的精神成为可能。这种精神应是 :在考虑到环境承载力的前提下 ,实现人类的可持续发展。  相似文献

This paper attempts to model translations from one language intoanother. Book markets are an integral part of the cultural life of anation, and new ideas on political, social and cultural aspects arespread by means of books. It is a fact, however, that linguisticbarriers will often prevent a book from reaching a mass audience unlessit is translated. But the mechanism involved in translations has notbeen adequately described. A model is presented here in three steps: Thefirst step is to determine the number of new books in an economy. Thenext step is to determine the propensity to import translated works fromother countries. The final step is to determine from which language thetranslation will originate.
